Funny you should mention waffle house. during the blizzard of 93? One waffle house up at the interstate was open, no power, or heat. They were serving some types of food by sterno warming and cooking and cold cereals . The interstate was shut down, people needed a refuge from the cold and snow. My hat goes off to waffle house. 
Wait until the first threat of freezing rain and the whole city shuts down.
My daughter drives to school and my kids have to walk to and from the bus. I don't have a problem with them closing for these 2 days. A local 16 year old high school girl was killed last week in a car accident when it was a clear, sunny morning. I can deal with the peace of mind I have while I am at work knowing my kids are home during some of this crap.
It's an easy call to make now but based on the hysteria and unknown weather predictions from yesterday it's hard to blame the school system. They had to make a call sooner rather than later.

Our company issued warnings and be careful and such but they are still open for those that want to commute in.
Personally i told all three of my teams (about 25 people) to work remote and don't think about coming in. Their well being is much more important to me than one or two days of lost or reduced work. Long run they are highly skilled and bust their asses for me. Now they can be there to ensure their families are safe.
Funny, it took my boss (an AVP) and the groups vp late into last night to make the same call.
Course I'm the same guy that saved their asses from snowmagedden a few years back. While everyone was stuck at work or got stuck on the freeway my team was warm and toasty at home. I still get mentioned in office talk for having the balls to make the call when others didn't.
The way I see it. My team, my call. I don't seek permission and haven't caught flak for doing so.
