I have a picture of it.

Ok, I got one.

Standing in line at Costco at the returns desk there was a person in front of me who had a worn out pair of tennis shoes looked like they were 4 years old and well worn in what appeared to be the original box.

They had the receipt and Costco actually returned the purchase price. I just shook my head.

My brother in law was a store manager at Home Depot years ago and he had to refund 5-6 year old riding mowers regularly due to corporate policies to not argue with the idiot customers. Unbelievable.

There used to be a segment on The Regular Guys radio show that referred to people like this and their ****bag stunts. I think the ghetto term they used it" That really ratchet."
I remember that.... hahaha....
I remember them talking about that lady also that called a radio station complaining “why the city put a deer crossing sign where is just too busy...” - funny guys in the morning.....

Hahaha see, this is why I asked OP if the picture worked to get the return through. The customer ain't stupid if it works. Unethical and ridiculous yes, but stupid is as stupid does haha

Yesterday, I was standing in line at the UPS store listening to a young man at the counter telling the clerk he wants to return the packaging tape he previously purchased. He handed the clerk an open "three pack" containing just 2 rolls of tape. The clerk explained to the young man that the tape is only sold as a three pack and asked where is the 3rd roll?
The young man stated he did not have the 3rd roll of tape with him, that it was at his house, but had a picture of it on his cellphone. Well there you have it. If you wish to return an item but don't have it with you simply show them a picture of it. Amazing.
Had to be a lib!

I've never had the guts/lack of integrity to do that.

Buddy worked in the commercial part of HD, builders would buy a chainsaw, use it for one job, return it for full credit.Same with heaters, vacs, basically any large purchase that wasn't a consumable. Because they were "commercial" they were treated with kid gloves.

I bought a "new" Honda self propelled lawn mower from a pawn shop here for less than half Home Depot's price since it was a Home Depot "return" sold at auction. Twenty minutes to clean the carburetor jets and it's like new. Some fool left ethanol gas in it, then returned it to Home Depot.

Saved me about $300.
