If you’re running low on M855

Speaking of academy it’s surprising how they are much higher on 5.56 and 9mm prices than a lot of other online places. When ammo first started going up in 2020 and into 2021, academy wasn’t increasing their prices like other online retailers were, that’s why there were lines of people outside the store every morning like every day was Black Friday. They were slow to raise prices, once their prices caught up to everyone else those lines out the door stopped. Now their shelves are slam full of ammo because they’re slow to lower their price while a lot of places have already come down a lot. Academy has been at 40 cents on 9mm and 60 cents on 5.56 for a while now, although they did drop some 9mm to 30 cent on sale, but it’s not hard to find it for even less than that online with free shipping right now. Just an observation that it seems like they are really slow to adjust to market price trends

One possibility with Academy is that they commit to a certain volume of ammo six- to twelve- months in advance, at a pre-agreed price. That way they can plan what their future retail price will be. Which works great in a competitive, regular market because they can price-match their smaller competitors and still have a respectable profit margin. Especially when retail prices are consistent or rising.

Of course, if they committed six months ago at a price and they didn't anticipate a fall in retail price as we've been seeing recently, they're actually paying for their supply with a much reduced profit margin. There's a certain level where they will lose money if they try and compete with the more nimble retailers who buy opportunistically when CCI are running a 'deal', so they'll reduce the price on the shelf to the lowest level that they can - even though they're more expensive than the competition, and anticipate the buyers not shopping around because they assume Academy "always has great prices".
