I am wondering if a particular event that has happened more than once around my house is "normal" or "never heard of such a thing before"?

A pack of beagles will come through the woods, including my yard and through the neighborhood streets and run between houses.

They are sniffing out rabbits.

Then a guy comes running through with a machete and chops the rabbits.

He leaves the rabbits chopped in the yard or where ever he encounters them. But I have found them chopped in the lawn at times.

Is this some sort of "traditional" southern sport or is there a real hunting season for this or is this guy just out of his mind?

I am guessing that this is done on farms to protect crops or something or some similar reason but I find it a bit much in a modern neighborhood setting. The houses were built where a farm used to be and the guy is on foot so he is local but is he not smart enough to figure it is not a farm field anymore?

Happened Friday night. This is the first time I have seen it happen at night. Usually 2 guys on a random weekend day although usually only one has the machete, other guy just seems to be following along. I have seen it 3 or 4 times in the past couple of years. Same guys, dogs, method. Leave the chopped rabbit behind.

Was there a great rabbit infestation in the past where this guy learned this or what?

Your thoughts?

Used to have some guys rabbit hunt on my farm. That is not the way they did it at all. I am thinking your guy must have a personal issue with rabbits harming his garden. I would HAVE to stop them and ask the details of his trespass.

Let us know if you find out, I am curious.

We used to run rabbits with a pack of beagles in my youth and it was great fun. However we used shotguns and we kept the rabbits and ate them. I can't believe he is actually fast enough to kill one by hand with a machette. All the ones I killed were usually hopping along at a pretty good pace well in front of the dogs.

Killing the rabbits and leaving them is "wanton waste" and is a game violation. Call the game warden.

That ain't hunting by any definition I have ever heard.

I agree,

Mr Green Jeans would likely be very interested in having a little talking with this misfit from a low-budget horror film.

Report him to the police. He is trespassing with a deadly weapon. That is not cool. He is not out in the country. Eventually he will freak someone out and they will shoot his ass.
