Yes it is. Most 45 ACP has a muzzle velocity of 850FPS. The speed of sound (supersonic) is 1,125FPS. This does make .45 ACP inherently subsonic but some will approach sound barrier speeds unpredictably. 45 ACP defense marketed as "subsonic" is intended to have better properties at moving air away from the projectile even at lower speeds, lowering the sound it makes. Mostly marketing, but Atomic claims "250 GRAIN bonded hollow point bullet, hand selected, clean burning powder and created to hit like a sledge hammer, retain 99% of its mass and penetrate more than 15 inches of ballistic medium." Nonetheless, high-quality 250 grain hollowpoint .45 ACP high-quality defense ammo isn't on every shelf.
