Not really sure, is there a way to tell on the frame?
Should have ESSEX ARMS CORP. stamped on the right side of frame, above trigger. The early frames produced by Essex were known to have mis-located the pin holes that hold the internals in place, which caused function issues. They have since corrected that problem. See attached photo:

neg on the Essex, doesn’t have the stamp. serial number starts with NLMO
 
If you have a standard recoil spring assembly instead of the full length rod you may try swapping them over. There could be a tolerance issue and the full length rod is binding the slide. Look for unusual wear marks inside the frame, on the barrel, and inside of the slide. That may tell you what’s going on. If I had the extra money I’d buy it myself! Good deal.
