Item Description: Up for sale is my Czech VZ-52 rifle, chambered in 7.62x45 (sleeved to accept 7.62x39). This is one of 200 Cuban VZ-52 rifles in the U.S. brought in by Century arms out of Nicaragua. Bore is in excellent condition and easily the best i have seen on one of these rifles. The stock is a bit ugly due to Century arms giving this gun the bedliner treatment, would do well with a refinish, as some of the bed liner is still visible.
this is one of 200 guns imported out of Nicaragua by Century in 1992. Here's the story of the guns:
The guns were carried by Cuban advisors/regulars in Grenada. Crest is not removed because it was carried by Cuban soldiers, rather than being an aid gun like those sent to Angola (Cuba scrubbed their crests from FALs, Vz52s, Mag58s etc. sent to the FNLA).
The US captured several thousand Cuban small arms in Operation Urgent Fury: some were destroyed, many were put in storage. 1052 Vz52s were among this cache.
The US then provided a large number of captured Cuban guns to the Contras in Nicaragua as part of the Iran-Contra scheme.
My theory on the crest itself is that the very first batches bought from Czechoslovakia were given this crest, but for expediency's sake the practice was dropped. Hard to say for sure. Cuban Honor Guard SKSs have the same crest, so could've been an honor guard rifle pressed into service.
