Please take her to an indoor ranges that rent guns and let her try out a few different models. What you or her think she might like and what she really likes might surprise the both of you. This will save you time and money in the long run and give her a chance to hold many different types of firearms at one time. An example would be I thought my wife would like the Sig p365 but she doesn’t she likes my Glock 19 better. Next step would be getting some lessons.

The S&W shield EZ in .380 would be a good choice but recoil is still significant for a beginner on that gun.
Manageable with a little training and the right grip technique and stance,
but still significant for a girl.

How about a medium sized semi auto in .32 acp caliber?
Not a pocket pistol (I say again, not a tiny little gun made for a pocket, but a pistol large enough to be intended for holster carry).
Such a gun would also be good as a nightstand gun for home defense.

8 or 9 rounds of .32 projectiles coming at a bad guy at nearly 1000 ft./s is nothing to sneeze at.

I about crapped myself thinking that was a Beretta M70 in .32 ACP in that picture and that it was yours. My wife wants one and I've spent FOREVER looking for one!

I purchased my mom the S&W EZ 380. Easy to chamber a round and the recoil is not too bad. I agree totally with your suggestion.

Yeah, a S&W air weight, .38 spl, hammerless would be a good start. Some come with lasers, easy to operate, dependable. Around 400-500 new.

I'm not so sure about a revolver as a first gun for a new shooter, especially a woman. They are reliable, for sure, but my wife is 4'11", 105 LB, and a 9MM was a lot for her, even though she could at least hit the target.

A .22 LR or .32 ACP would be perfect for a beginner, especially if it's a revolver. A 9MM or .380 would be the next step up depending on comfort.

It's also about the weight. Again, everyone is different, but I just can't fathom a revolver being a good first gun for someone in a .38 special.
