Item Description: For sale is a Mle1866-74 Chassepot/Gras.
This rifle was started life as the famed needle fire Chassepot. Made in 1869 during the reign of Napoleon III during the Second French Empire, this example no doubt saw action during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, and very probably was at the Battle of Sedan, which saw the capture of N3.
In 1874 these rifles began to undergo conversions into the Gras rifle system, which fired a brass cartridge as opposed to the Chassepot's paper round. The M80 marking shows it went under further modification by cutting a 'gas vent' near the breech. The 'C.85' marking on the barrel shows this work being done at the Chatellerault arsenal in 1885.
The wood on this one is rough, and shows a lot of repairs...it also shows a duffle cut fix. You will need the following on this rifle:
Bolt securing screw
Extractor
Rear sight leaf (Gras)
The always missing and super hard to find cleaning rod IS present.
Bore is VERY good for its age. This rifle will make a fine historical shooter.
Please PM with any questions, thanks!
