You bring up a good point. Will the police confiscate your weapon? Even on a clearly good shooting (castle doctrine situation) ?
If so does that change your weapon of choice?
I still think i would employ the weapon that has the most stopping force first to end the situation quickly.
If its me standing between a criminal and my family, I see using all my resources probably in some descending order of stopping power.
The police can have want they want after the shooting, as long as my family is uninjured.
Guns are replaceable.

I think i'd load my mossy with some bean bag rounds and dragons breath and do like Jesus, light him on fire and send him to hell(Daniel Tosh line...) !
