As everyone says, yes it sucks, but its the best choice for the dog. When i was in the 6th grade my dad bought me an Australian Shepard. I had her for 12 years and when we went to pit her down, she had probably lost over half her weight from not eating. I couldnt stand to be in the room when the vet put her down but damn it my heart still aches for not being in there...

I have a 10 year old pit and a 18 month old pit, both rescues, and quite possibly, the sweetest dogs on the face of the earth!!! I tear up thinking about having to put either one of these dogs down as they both snore away on the couch next to me. But Ill be there to the end with rm both when the time comes!! Instead of kids, my wife and I would rathet raise dogs at the moment. As John Bell of Widespread Panic sings in the song of C Brown " Sometimes a dog, is as good as any man..."

This is gonna be awful, but i gotta do it. Going to take him to the vet saturday. Hes had a long life (16 or 17 years) but he is pretty much blind and deaf. Also is basically skin amd bones since he dont eat much, plus his back legs give out.

I dont like the idea of putting him out to pasture but its gotten to where we cant effictively take care of him (he cant help but pee inside now it seems).

Ive never done this before. Whats the run down on the procedure, anything i should expect or anticipate?

Man I'm so sorry you are having to do this. I know you loved this pet since you shared the past 16/17 years with him, and this will be hard for you no doubt. I had to put one of our cats to sleep about a year ago and it was hard for me, but it was very hard on my wife. She insisted on holding her cat until he passed and even a few minutes after he passed. She was so upset I had to help her out of the office! It's your choice to be there at the time or not, but most of the time when a person has shared that much time with the pet he/she wants to be there to comfort their friend until it's over. My vet always gives a sleep medicine prior to giving the main medicine. It took my cat less than 10 seconds and my dog a little longer, maybe 15 to 20 seconds. They both fell asleep rather fast but continued to breath for a few more seconds after that. Again brother I'm sorry and wish you the best!

We were putting off having our older dog put down. He was blind. He got outside recently by accident and my wife found him dead in the road on her way home. It was awful.
You are doing the right thing…it's hard but it is the right thing.

Sorry chucklenut, one of the hardest things to do in life. Knowing "when" is a difficult decision but you are correct to do it now imo if that's of any help.
