Deal approved the proposal, HB 292, which makes a host of changes to the Peachtree State’s gun and knife laws on Monday along with a host of other bills without comment. The measure passed the House 110-49 and the Senate 37-16 in March and had been on Deal’s desk since April 5.

SECTION 3.

91 Part 3 of Article 4 of Chapter 11 of Title 16 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated,

92 relating to carrying and possession of firearms, is amended by revising paragraph (2) of Code

93 Section 16-11-125.1, relating to definitions, as follows:

94 "(2) 'Knife' means a cutting instrument designed for the purpose of offense and defense

95 consisting of a blade that is greater than (five is deleted) 12 inches in length which is fastened to a

96 handle."

Looking at the timeline for HB292, it looks like it was signed in May of last year...Most likely on the 40th and last day the Governor has to sign or veto a bill once the session ends. Anything not signed or vetoed by then automatically becomes law at the time contained within the bill. In this case, the new law was in effect the day the bill was signed; May 8, 2017...See Section 10...
