Knife Porn 101

I've been an avid collector of these mechanical beauties for years. I love them and for cutting rope, boxes, etc they're awesome ... I wouldn't trust it with my life because it can be disabled by a paperclip or a dime being in your pocket with it but they sure are handy.

I'd love to try one out! Just can't convince myself to pull the trigger on that expensive of a blade, lol..

Flush mine about once every two months with zippo fluid and have always been g2g.

No what I mean is whether you "keep it clean" or not if you put it in your pocket and you have a paperclip or a dime floating around in the same pocket it easily finds its way into the front between the blade and the opening and the nature of the safety mechanism of the knife prevents the blade from firing when this happens. The only OTF Microtech that doesn't behave this way are the halo or nemesis models that aren't dual action and keep a spring under load.

I'm not trying to poopoo on these knives ... I really, really love them ... but they aren't a "combat" knife despite what the name "combat trooden" might suggest.

Halos are the sex. I just have horrible visions of activating one in my pocket and impaling myself.

We can agree to slightly disagree. I carry a Combat Troodon, have a few years. While I've never had a Hollywood close quarter battle, I've used in many quick draw situations. I carry a firearm for real defense, and generally have a neck knife or something such.

I keep my CT clipped on one of my lower pockets using it's superior pocket clip. Not dimes it paperclips in there to jimmy it up. Could it happen? Of course. Sure as a firearm could malfunction.

But luckily that's why there are no less than 10,000 different knives for people to choose from.

But I've personally never had a problem from this one, any of my Dalton's, my old Infidel.

I've had no less than three dimes stuck in a combat troddon .....it happens. I promise. I'm not talking about fighting with a knife when I say a "combat" knife I'm just talking about something that you have to trust your life to even if it means being able to cut yourself out of webbing or rope that you're stuck in ..... I also promise that no person that relies on their knife for survival would ever trust one of these as their only knife and the people that make them don't even suggest that you do. (These knives are made 20 minutes from my ex Pennsylvania home town) They have no illusions about these DA OTF knives use. They are a convenience ... there is a reason that they make a whole line of folding and fixed blade knives as well.

Now having said all of that ... Some knife porn ...

Nice set up. I am overly fond of my Seb and UmZaan. I have an embarrassing collection of Busse as well.

In regards to an OTF as a survival item, I wasn't aware we had made the jump from the conversation of EDC to survival and battle.
I know Anthony and the guys as well. Can't say they are really friends. They make a good solid knife, but how they view themselves and run their company is a whole other thread.

So I will close by saying that while I carry my DA OTF as an EDC item, in my line of work ( which produces many unforeseen obstacles), I have never had these mentioned issues.
I repeat, could they happen? Of course. And seemingly they do as you have witnessed. But that in no way diminishes their value as a good EDC mechanical knife.
To be quite honest. I have bought no less than 20 Lightning cheapo China/ Taiwan OTF's and gifted to those that love mine, but can't budget them. 80% of them are still operational and used daily ( of those reporting).

Again. I don't wish to get too far off topic on a more than glorious thread. Rare for ODT. HAHA

^^ This. I am aware the combat troodon has a much larger opening, which I would imagine leads to the dime/paper clip issue. But in my experience, my ultratech has absolutely never failed due to change/other sh*t getting stuck in the opening. The blade sits so close to the entrance and the opening is not big enough to produce failures of any kind, and still rides with 2 inches or so from the bottom of my pocket anyhow.

Tabor Custom EDC. Green w/ micarta scales & other w/ camel bone scales. The sharpest blade I own...green one was a Father's Day gift to my Brother in-law.
