I did similar last night with some field peas and black eyed peas frozen from my backyard.

My dad who lived to be 95 years old, swore by beans as an excellent food source with lots of protein. He enjoyed chili and ham and beans for MANY years. He was fun to be around too!!!!

Always save mine in the freezer and make a HUGE pot of vegetable soup every Christmas.
With cornbread of course.

4 years our company used to have a Christmas / Thanksgiving turkey and ham roast. They do a dozen of each and I always brought a five gallon bucket with a clean garbage bag in it when the guys were taking everything off the bone and I got all the bones. This went on for several years cuz nobody else seemed to want them. Then some idiot from the upper office decided he wanted half he had a dog. There's always somebody screwing up a good thing. I love to soak me some pinto beans put that bone in there with some onion who boy. Then when I get my bold I sprinkle some Tony chachere's on it. I'm the only one that likes it hot. That next night I could fart start a wood stove.
