I'm not really a hog hunter. I've been a few times but it just isn't for me. I was hiking in the Cohutta Wilderness today and came across two half starved dogs with tracking collars on. I fed them some granola bars and coaxed them into following me on the trail. When I got to my truck I put them in the back and headed towards Blue Ridge. I called the number on their collars and the man who answered asked if I'd meet him. I met him and gave him his dogs. After he thanked me, I asked him what he'd been hunting with the dogs. He acted like he didn't want to say so I just came out and asked if he'd been dogging hogs and he said yes. I love dogs and didn't really like the idea of giving these dogs back to him so they could live in some muddy pen 7 days a week and then get gored by hogs on the weekend. They were his dogs so I didn't say anything. I'd just like to know if it is legal to hunt hogs with dogs on Cohutta. If it is then no wonder it's so hard to find deer up there.

How do you know they were hunting on cohutta anyhow? Maybe they hunted some farmers fields next to the wma..You ever think of that? How do you know what his pens looked liked if you met him somewhere? He may hunt 3 or 4 days a week for all you know..If they had tracking collars on..He obviously cares about the dogs..Something bad must have happened for him not to have them..Tracking collar or tracker could have went dead.. You sound like some kind of anti hunter hunter to me!!! I'm glad you gave his dogs back though...

Not an anti. I hunt deer, ducks, and I'll hunt elk when I can afford the trip. I don't like hog hunting because I don't like the meat. Those dogs had only been lost for 3 days if he was telling the truth and they looked like hell. Covered in ticks, cuts, and their ribs were showing. I thought they'd been in there for weeks when I saw them. I'm definitely not against hunting. I am against animal cruelty: dog, pig, or otherwise. Do you really believe he has them in some cushy fenced in yard? They were his dogs and its not for me to tell him what to do. I don't have to like it.

Unfortunately not every one has the same ideas about what constitutes adequate care for dogs, whether they are hunting dogs or pets. He did at least care enough to run tracking collars to try and avoid losing his dogs. I've spent some miserable hours trying to pick up a signal on some of mine before, but thankfully always went home with all of them in the truck. Thank you for calling him and returning them, I know i'd appreciate it had they been mine.

About a month ago we went hog hunting with dogs. We spent about 3 hours looking for one of the dogs. Pitch black out and it had a collar. We found it in a bank. A hog had rolled him around a bit. It had a little blood on his nose. Point being....the owner spent more time looking for his dog than we spent hunting hogs.... because he trained his dogs and does care about them. As far as pens... I have worked on a lot of farms where the dogs are roaming or only stay in a barns..... it really falls on the use of the dog.... not everyone wants to cuddle up with their dogs...... IMHO

As far as hunting on WMAs.... "Dogs are not allowed for pursuing or catching feral hogs." This is from the new Reg. Page 22 for the Dog section of the WMA portion.

I was a little misguided to paint all "doggers" with the same brush. I'm sure there are plenty who take great care of their dogs. There are some that give you guys a bad name. Just like there are some "dog" people that take it to extremes. Hog dogging is not for me but I respect your right to do it. I tend to think the guy I met was one of the bad apples. Thanks for answering my question.

You don't know anything and should just stay out of the mountains!!!! Any dog that is lost for three days will be totally delapedated and if you had half a brain you would know this.

Last seen 2014, you tell him though!

I’ve hiked all over that area. Dogs and people get lost all the time. He’s extremely fortunate that you found them. With all the streams and switch bags dogs just go missing. Plus there are bears.
