You got it! It's a 5.56x21mm round. It holds 18 and weighs over 2lbs! I've got to look up which came first though, this or Robocop's Beretta.

After some more digging it seems this design came out around 2007 (WELL after Robocop) and only lasted a year. And, like cmshoot 's guess, it was based heavily on the Beretta.
