1903 Springfield rifle of WWI fame

Okay, here's the answer on that
weird gun helmet thing:
You'd bite down on a little bulb at the end of a rubber tube to shoot, and that air pressure would cause the gun to fire.
The real trigger mechanism was actually located in the helmet just above the top of your skull.
