Letter from Apple to their customers (a must read)

Apple made the right decision. You know what protects against terrorism? The Second Amendment. These two idiots are dead and I'm laughing at the thought of spending potentially millions of dollars just to unlock a cellphone that probably has jack on it. Computers needed to run these algorithms in a timely fashion use a lot of energy, not including AC costs to keep the systems from overheating. And if you have a prolonged legal fight with Apple, the cost of retrieving this data will go into the millions of dollars, if it's not there already.

Far more efficient ways of obtaining intel regarding future attacks. Another example of "you don't have anything to hide citizen, so help us out".

PS: everyone should encrypt all their damn data.

I totally get it. The story has been on Fox News all day and I see both side of the argument. I'm as much for catching all the bad guys as anyone and I'm also a firm believer in keeping what little privacy we may still have out of the hands of Govt. especially a liberal Govt. I just think that since Apple wrote the encryption that the Govt. can't unlock that they could unlock the encryption on just that phone only, in private, and give all of the unencrypted info to authorities so they can do their job without showing them how to do it. Maybe I'm wrong but it just seems like they could unlock one without giving out a master key to all.

I agree. FOX News has reported that Apple has done this for the government 70 times before, therefore, I don't believe Apple doesn't have the firmware to do it. So, if that's true and the government can't unlock this phone, Apple must have done it in private without giving away the How To.

What does Apple consider different about this phone?

Big Brother is going about this all wrong.

A child could understand.

It shouldn't be the FBI.

It should be the FTC. Federal Trade Commission.

Offer Apple a monopoly on the smart phone market in the US.

That phone would be unlocked tomorrow.

At present time Apple has no way to unlock that phone even if they have it in their labs.

The court is ordering them to develop a new OS which could be pushed to that phone and make it less secure so it could be unlocked.

Reread that. The United States government wants to FORCE with threat of jail a private software company to create, develop, and implement a new operating system that currently does not exist that would jeopardize the security of every apple device around the globe .

I fully support Apple and Tim Cook on this one.

Not only is the US Government trying to force a company to create something (which cost money) by threatening them with jail, but if Apple complies it will pretty much destroy their business in a market they invented.

/thread.

(oh, and Rubio thinks Apple should comply with the govt...)

Everyone is clamoring to give up their scraps of privacy as a burnt offering on the altar of big government to keep the boogey man away. It just blows my mind.

I was listening to Hannity the other day...I really can't stand him but ti was better than listening to the crap on the other radio stations about celebrity gossip...anyway, he thinks apple is in league with the terrorists.

He also thinks Trump is right and that we should take the oil from the countries we "liberated" to help pay for the cost of their liberation and continued defense.....The irony seem totally lost on him and all the other lemmings. I seem to recall some colonists fighting a war over being taxed by some far away superpower to pay or their defense at some point.

I agree with NW Shooter, if the information can save American lives Apple should let the FBI read what's on the Killers phone.

I think you are misreading the letter
They want Apple to create software so that the FBI can read EVERYONE'S iPhone. The FBI is using the incident as an excuse.

Apple Inc. is in league with Apple Inc. and its majority shareholders. Its only interest is the bottom line.
