Lever Guns - Winchester, Marlin, or ?

LOVE my late '70s Marlin 44 mag lever action. Its my fav. rifle in my safe. Smooth action, compact, light wieght and 10 rounds of 44 Mag.. whats not to like. Winchesters are just as good, but top eject, so harder(not impossible) to mount a scope if your into that sort of thing.........

Exactly the type of thing I would not have known - thanks!

There is something about a lever action that makes you feel like YOU are really in control of your firearm. They are just perfectly balanced for carrying and shooting. I am one of the old-timers who think the balanced is thrown off by adding a scope, but if that is your thing the Marlins, in particular work well with them.

I prefer the Marlin. I've shot winchester but the marlin 336 with the solid receiver and sliding round bolt, just seems stronger and slicker I never liked how much of the "guts" come out when operating a Winchester lever. Nothing better in my opinion for basic open-siget (peep) hunting at 150 yards or less.

However my favorite deer rifle has now become an 1894 in 44 magnum -- the old-reliable 30-30 has not seen the woods in a few years.
I love the old 444 marlin but to be honest the .44 mag can be loaded to much more than one needs to hunt east of the Mississippi and south of the Great Lakes.

I had a .357 which was extremely fun to shoot, especially with .38s but there seemed to be no reason to "need" it with the 44, and the market was so good, I sold it. (I often regret that.) Oddly enough, I did not choose to "match" my handgun shooting. In revolvers I shoot mainly .38 but almost never shoot .44 mag.

To be honest, there is a known feed problem with SOME of the 1894's with pistol cartridges (I think it effects the .357 more especially feeding .38s). It is known as "Marlinitis" (Search for it.) It does not affect all, and it is fixable with some stoning and polishing. None of mine had the problem.

They only new firearm I have purchased is a model 39. (22 rimfire). It shoots everything, and it will be one of the last to go. I'd much rather rely on it to fill the pot in emergencies than my 10/22.

I have owned and shot alot of the Marlins. I still have my first 1894 44mag that I bought in the middle 70s at KMart for $74.99 and my Century Limited 39 at Hamilton Dist. for $99.99. I also currently have a 1895 45-70 in the 70s. I also have 1894s in 357mag and 45lc.

I don't care for the winchesters other than the 1886 and 1895 (I think, the model that came in 30-06)
