But seriously, I was buying classmates gold jewelry and HS class rings when I was a freshman in college '78-9 (it pissed off a few parents too)

Just a couple of years behind you as I'm an 80 HS grad. My brain still thinks I'm young; but my body says FAFO every time I think about doing something stupid.
