The gas check is just what its name implies. It "checks" the gas preventing two things from happening which will effect accuracy negatively. First and most important, it prevents gas cutting. Gas cutting is when the temperature and pressure of the gas melts the lead around the bullet waist NOT in contact with the grooves and results in molten lead spraying down the bore in front of the bullet. Second, as previously posted, it prevents the gas from melting the lead on the lead on the base of the bullet and depositing it in the barrel, also very nasty. I do not use them on rounds that I load UNDER 1,600 fps and do use them on rounds I load faster than that speed.
