Does anyone here make or have a recommendation for a NMLRA approved competition knife.
I'm looking for a hand crafted and American made knife.
I can get one from Beaver Bill or HB Forge but I thought I'd check to see if there was anyone local.
Whenever possible I prefer to spend my money close to home and support my own community.

Things sure have changed in the muzzle loading world since I used to compete back in the early 70's. Looked at competition specs on NMLRA, seemed a bit backdoor retentive. Easy enough to make one though. Lot would depend on how you personally want it to look so that it fits in with the rest of your gear. If you can send me a picture or two of what you have in mind with approximate dimensions and weight, be glad to discuss a build.
That being said, it will still be a month or so before I can get back to full use of my hammer hand (carpal tunnel surgery). So if you are in a time crunch I'd not be able.

It's kind of ironic in that during my competition days I was a 100%er and made all my gear including my rifles. Kept selling/trading my knives and hawks, but rifles were hard to move due to the price. Jimmy "Rabbit Killer" Carter kind of reduced everyone's extra spending money back then. Sooooo, I gravitated toward just make knives. Do miss the smells of greasy leather and burnt sulfur, still use Moni Lynn for the occasional tree rat massacre just for grins.

I'll check back with you in a couple of months then when you're all healed.
That's assuming of course that I last that long.
As PM pointed out we're a dying breed. Young folks don't have the patience or sense of history to take up a sport that requires both.

Back to throwing knives, all I can say is I've tried about two dozen of them over the years and my favorites are the big ones-- 6 inch to 9 inch blade, 1 foot+ of overall length, and of course they need to be heavy duty because they don't always hit the target point first and stick!!

Right now my favorite modern knife for throwing is actually the Glock FM 81 field knife. I bought 4 for that purpose and eventually gave two away keeping two for myself.

While that model obviously can't be used in a muzzleloading club competition, if you could find something with similar dimensions and weight, I recommend it.
