Looking to get a motorcycle, question...

When you see a bear in a cave, sometimes you do not want to wake him up
cause you will get eaten alive.
i think everyone here is missing the point that i am looking for a project. it is worth the money to me even if it does nothing more than keep me occupied for a few months.

looking for a motorcycle, and have a question.

friend of mine has a 1978 honda cb750. it needs alot of work, new gas tank, some wiring re-done, paint, re-upholster the seat, and as far as i can tell the motor needs to be rebuilt.

fortunately, i am a tinkerer. i like having some sort of project to work on, but im trying to figure out if this bike is a lost cause. it has new tires and brakes, and all of the light work. i have seen him ride it, and when he rode it by the house it ran fine. it has been parked a year and from what i can tell the motor is locked down.

he told me to bring him $100 and i can leave with it. given the work that needs to be done, is this thing worth it financially? keep in mind i like to tinker on things and i like having a project, though i wonder if this is a little too much of a project....

I had a CB750 myself years past. 1973. I sold it 8 years ago.I miss it and had no issue except carburators. HArd to find an old school mechanic to work on it.I miss it but is I could would want it back. My cousin has its brother up North a 1975 version that is still running

I ride a Harley, but love the vintage Hondas too. I think you stole the bike, especially since you love to work on things. I'm the same way. You will probably find that unless the previous owner blew it up, you will be able to get it running again. One year is not long to sit unattended. Parts can be found. Yes, you might have more money in it when you are finished compared to buying an already running one, but yours will be much nicer, and you can say you did it. Good luck with your tinkering. I'm more into the older Honda trail bikes and minibikes.

he drove it to my house the day before he parked it. he parked it because the spout broke off the bottom of the gas tank.

Try marvel mystery oil, i have heard that will do it. You can do it man, that is how I learned to fix things was by working on projects

I've been riding for ears. If the bike is fixable buy it and tinker away. If the bike even seems like a lost cause save your cash. I ride an 09 Fatbob that makes me miss my Vulcan 1500. Harley's are are over priced and over rated.

You asked if it was worth it and if it was too much of a project. I think guys are just responding to your post and being honest and you're not liking what you're reading. Don't post if you don't want the truth from this bunch. Tinker away. Get a book about CV carbs and motorcycle valve trains (yours should be a shim over bucket on the CB) and you'll be on your way. Or you can just tear it apart and god knows what happens then! LOL
Seen that too many times! By the way, bike carbs and motors are not built like their car counter parts other than basic basic 4 stroke theory. Oh and pics. We wanna see this thing!

just got the bike unloaded off the trailer. i put the bike in 4th gear, grabbed the clutch and rolled down the trailer. halfway down the trailer i let off the clutch and the motor broke loose. gonna change the oil and plugs tomorrow, put a little air back in the front tire, put some gas in the lines and fire it up. ill hook a bottle up to the fuel lines and see how it drives.

looks like the only work ill have to do will be the cosmetics i want. i believe i came out like a bandit at $50.
