the book 'we were soldiers once young'..or something like that..was a great read. the movie paled in comparison and really never got what the book was really all about. Our CO made his PL's read it, so I figured I'd read it to see what the hub bub was all about.. for you red legs out there, artillery was a huge part of the story that never really got told in the movie.

Every Airborne soldier wants that mustard stain.. I bet there was nothing lower than a CPT or light colonel on that jump.

C co 3/505 PIR .... that moment was the change of my "military career". I was an E4 carrying a M249 at the time. They removed all of the riflemen and grenadiers from our sticks and replaced them with officers wanting mustard stains. Granted Haiti wasn't going to be like jumping into the Soviet Union - but I was slightly demoralized sitting there with 400 rounds of ammo (1000 rounds was battle pack) and two concussion grenades. My rifle shot 700-900 rounds per minute and wtf was I going to do with concussion grenades? Our (my company's) task was to assemble and take out the Navy barracks (with the SEALS in support after they took out the two dinghies) then to hook up with 3/75 to take out the "Police Barracks". We were also on the bird hearing the "go" and "no go" news. F'in Jimmy Carter!!! Nothing sucked more than being in lock down afterwards for "debrief" with a bunch of pissed off paratroopers. Only thing I have to show for it is I know how to say "stop ... put down your weapon" in Creole. I actually recently tried it on a friend who grew up in Haiti ... he was pretty shocked and asked me how the hell I knew that phrase!
