It is illegal to make moonshine. It is legal to distill alcohol at home for cleaning/fuel use but you need a federal license. Said license is not particularly difficult nor expensive to get. You should expect "the man" to show up for random inspection purposes and there must be evidence that any product made has been duly adulterated with methyl alcohol to render it unfit/unsafe for human consumption.

You can get a federal license to make ethanol for fuel and you don't have to adulterate it
