Movie: The Road (anyone watched this?)

Loved the book and the movie was pretty damn good. The fall of society, ruffians getting together and forming roaming gangs, cannablism, not knowing if your safe spot is safe, and finding “the good people” that are left.
Love Duvals cameo too FWIW

Seen it and read it. Hard to prepare for a world ending event. Outside of my capabilities. When all plants and animals die and the air gives you miners lung what's the point of surviving? You would need a large bunker with a completely independent power system like underground hydro (Fast moving river in a deep cave or something) or natural gas well with a lifetime of food, water and airfilters. It would take the earth more than one of our lifetimes to recover from a scenario like that. Serenity prayer and wisdom to know the difference and all that. Depressing damn movie. Good but depressing. If I wasnt fortunate enough to die in the initial wave I'd just hunt cannibals till I died.

It all depends on how "world ending" it is. Many event's could be somewhat local and there is still survivable land someplace. Others could be short term. There could be so much dust and ash in the atmosphere that little sunlight get's through and practically everything dies, but the ash settles to the ground in a few years and the earth can then rejuvenate. If you are in it, most of the time you won't know if it's one of these or if it's long term and world wide.

It's also possible for humans to live in an almost closed system for extended periods of time and it's not really that hard to create one with a little care. It would take a lot of effort to live there, but it could be done. If there are outside sources of air and water that can be purified, food can be grown in enclosed areas. The food is where all the work comes in. Generating enough energy for artificial photosynthesis. (powering grow lights)

It's never explained what exactly happened in the movie, not sure about the book, but what could cause that kind of event? Super volcanic eruption maybe?

Oh, and I watched the movie alone, on my birthday, in a hotel in Taunton MA right after my sons each decided to go live with their Mom instead of me because I had 'too many rules'...yeah, perfect movie to remind me how hard it is to be a Father...

Yeah, from the effect, I would think a Super Volcano or a distant asteroid strike.
