I'm interested in the MRE's as well. I have wanted to get a few boxes for a while now.

It's mainly because a lot of them are stolen. Units end up with extras and it's a pain to turn them back in. Then you have an E-4 that knows he can sell them for $5 or so. It's quick easy money and you end up with government property being sold.
