My 18 year old asked my to buy him a handgun

i think at 18 he can buy a handgun himself to my knowledge but he can not carry said handgun until turning 21 and getting a permit

i am not a lawyer and do not know every law on the book though

This is true I was toting handguns since 18 just kept in my car and home. couple years ago when cop asked if I was armed and I told the truth he says "what was I doing with it im not 21" cop says... told him I brought it private and only travel and keep it in home .ran the serial told me how nice it was and kept it moving!

In Georgia the law Requires a person to be 21 and older to purchase or possess a handgun. If he has one that you bought both of you could be charged, him for possession and you for purchasing it and allowing him to carry it. Simply said, wait till he's 21. a rifle and shotgun will do fine for now.

No sir. You can legally buy from an individual at 18 or 21 from an FFL (dealer). You can have in your home or vehicle (extension of home). Hunting is fine as long as you follow the rules.

Possession of handguns by minors: Minors (persons under the age of 18) are NOT allowed by Georgia law to possess handguns unless the following exceptions apply:

Attending a hunter education course or a firearms safety course.
Engaging in practice in the use of a firearm or target shooting
Engaging in an organized competition involving the use of a firearm or participating in or practicing for a performance by an organized group
Hunting or fishing pursuant to a valid license if such person has in his or her possession such a valid hunting or fishing license if required; is engaged in legal hunting or fishing; has permission of the owner of the land on which the activities are being conducted; and the pistol or revolver, whenever loaded, is carried only in an open and fully exposed manner (no concealing of the firearm)
Traveling to or from any activity described above, provided that firearm is carried in a unconcealed and unloaded fashion.
Any minor who is on real property under the control of such person's parent, legal guardian, or grandparent and who has the permission of such person's parent or legal guardian to possess a firearm.
Any minor who is at such person's residence and who, with the permission of such person's parent or legal guardian, possesses a pistol or revolver for the purpose of exercising the rights authorized in Code Section 16-3-21 or 16-3-23. (self defense laws, listed further down the page)
The exceptions DO NOT apply to any minor who has been convicted of a forcible felony or forcible misdemeanor, as defined in Code Section 16-1-3, or who has been adjudicated delinquent under the provisions of Article 1 of Chapter 11 of Title 15 for an offense which would constitute a forcible felony or forcible misdemeanor, as defined in Code Section 16-1-3, if such person were an adult.
(It appears as if GA law, even though prohibits minors from possessing handguns except as provided above, does not prohibit minors from possessing rifles and shotguns, unless they have been convicted of a felony or forcible misdemeanor. Under GA law, children under the age of 13 cannot be considered or found guilty of any crime.) (16-11-132, 16-3-1)

Furnishing a Pistol to a Minor - It is illegal to sell or give a pistol or revolver to a person under 18 years old. Possession of handguns by minors is only allowed as explained in the Possession section above. (16-11-101.1)

On the family farm I open carried a Ruger .357 Magnum Blackhawk at the age of 13.

Not even remotely true. You must be 21 to purchase a pistol from an FFL due to federal law. Under GA state law, persons 18 and older can purchase pistols in private sale. (O.C.G.A. 16-11-101.1) As far as possession, goes he can have at at home, or in his (and ONLY his) motor vehicle. If he wants to carry it outside of the home or car, it must be carried unloaded and enclosed in a case (O.C.G.A. 16-11-126). Stop spreading misinformation.

Georgia's entire legal code is posted online here -> http://www.lexisnexis.com/hottopics/gacode/
More specifically, most gun laws can be found between 16-11-121 and 16-11-135.

I've got a friend who has a big farm in south GA, and his 13-year old has been packing a 9mm glock on his belt regularly since he was 11. He is the eldest of the three kids, and is as mature, and more sensible/intelligent than most adults. They are a homeschool family, and his dad works in a nearby town. His parents view him as the guardian of the siblings when they are out on the property in the Gator. The middle child is 11-years old, and not as mature and a bit of a hothead, so he's not allowed to handle any firearms without strict supervision. The "baby sister" is 9, and she's much like the eldest. I recall her packing a .22 revolver on her hip when she was 7, and she shot her first deer when she was 6 (with a .223 under her grandfather's supervision). If you spend 30 minutes around the youngest and oldest, you'd have no issue whatsoever with them packing heat on the farm like they do. They are all good kids, so it's really about maturity and ability to make sound decisions. It all depends upon the child.
