My 18 year old asked my to buy him a handgun

He can buy a handgun private sale.
But to buy from a ffl needs to be 21. Same with ammo.
He can own a handgun at 18 and have it at home or in his car but if its In his car it must not be loaded and in a locked box.
I'm 19 and Iv done lots of research and also got information from police officers.

Legally he can have one but you being his father you decide if he is ready for one.
A gun is a gun weather it be a long gun or handgun. If your not mature enough you shouldn't have either one.
Iv grown up around guns got my first gun at 9 years old and my first handgun at 12. So I know when to take It with me and leave it home. (Stays home 98% of the time)

When I was 16 my Dad was on call so my neighbor went to the gun show with me to buy a pistol. I haven't killed anyone with it yet.... It depends if you are a legal guardian, if so it is okay.

What's up with you guys freaking out at a kid with a handgun? If the dad knows the maturity and sensibility of his son he can make the decision.

Had a baby Browning when I was 8, and all of my children have firearms (ages 7-12). Here's a thought, turn the damn TV, and XBox off and get out and teach your children individual responsibility and firearm safety.

No. My son asked me the same thing about that age and I would not. He was ticked for awhile but got over it. He needed to mature some first. He is 32 now with a stable family and guns actually provide us our closest bond. Most of our communication, which is 3-4 times a week is firearms related. It is the tie that bonds.

My son is a freshmen at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. He ask me the same thing this summer prior to going. They cannot have cars on campus as knobs, but can check firearms into the armory. I decided I would see how the first part of the year went and decided to give him Citadel .45 for Christmas so he could shoot at the range. So far it has not been a problem and he is getting pretty good. Although he is already on scholarship for wrestling and a Army contract, he is thinking about joining one of there competition shooting squads. I did some customization of the .45 and replaced a few things internally, but included a few photos below just to brag a little. Bottom line is I think both parents have to be on board and that each case has to be taken individually. Boys mature at different levels and different situations dictate different judgement calls. Had my son been at any other school than a military college, there is no way in hell I would have bought him a pistol.
