I'm betting the tarp he found was one left by us for just such an occasion as we do a lot of bare essential trips and camp on the island. www.usgs.gov will give you the water level and you can predict it some as to when it rises and falls.

You did one heck of a job finding them and my hat's off to you for that. Better to take matters into your own hands if you are doubtful that the officers may not get the job done in a timely manner. And to do it right then without hesitation. Of course I feel certain I would have done anything possible myself if it had been my son. Very glad they are OK and although I have never been too much of a gadget kind of guy (handheld GPS in the woods, etc.) after reading this I will re-assess my thinking. I have been lost in big, very big woods before and made it out, but this reminded me of that incident and the GPS is a great modern tool. Perhaps I am foolish for sticking to some of my old school ways. Again, great job in finding them and very glad everyone is OK.

You can't predict the Ocmulgee. That would be another mistake for less than experienced paddlers.

I just found this thread- like everyone else said, glad they're safe. Good for you finding them... sounds like everyone learned a little on that trip.


Being a new cub scout den leader, I leave the house expecting to pull a kid out of a well before a 2 mile hike is over... thankfully I haven't had to do that yet.

As I said you can predict it SOME. No guarantee but you can look at the past times of release and get a better idea than just going in the blind. But yes you can even call the dam and they'll even tell you noway to know exactly for sure when they will release.It's a pleasnt paddle at about 1000cfs with little effort. Anything above that isn't for the novice really.
