My Ruger Gunsite Scout thread of awesomeness

ok....now im torn on scope options. gonna be a straight up GA deer slayer (and if i get a chance, hog slayer) gun.

i got my XS rail in so im really not limited at all on types. i have a nice 3-9 on it right now. but been debating to go lower to a 1-4 power, used to have a millet dms 1-4 that i absolutly loved for my 6.8spc AR i used to have. really looking at getting another for this. or go a bit higher power to like a 4-12 or 4-16. the problem with the higher ones is the objective size size, i dont want a huge objective lens and mounting could be a issue (lotta rail with the XS system, think flat top AR).

and i would prefer a 30mm tube size, already have a super nice set of leupold QD rings that i want to use for it.

and i think i sold myself on a 1-4 as i was typing this lol. and one day if i get the money, a Acog.

Great thread, I've been following your progress. A 1-4x doesn't narrow it down much for you, there's a ton of options, lol. If I didn't have a 1-4 already, I'd probably get the new 1-6x from Primary Arms.

I'm going hunting in October and I plan to bring my GSR along. Mine doesn't have a scope so I'm going shopping this weekend. I'm leaning towards a scout scope to set it up as Cooper intended. I'm hoping to find a 2-7x.

I knew you'd wonder how you got along without a left handed bolt gun.
Stay with a 3-9x there's a reason that most deer slayers are equipped that way.
Truth be told a VX3 would probably serve you quite well for the rest of your life.
They are very tough units, That's one of the many reasons besides bright and clear they have earned their reputation.

hmmmmmm i dunno about that primary arms one. that reticule doesn't look tempting enough to me, have to look at one to see if i like it. ive been looking at the 1-4 VX HOG scope by Leupold and the Mk AR Mod 1 1.5-4. i might go ahead and stick the with 3-9 i have for this year though, i need to go put a solid zero on it in case i get the chance to take a deer this year lol. finding it hard to make up my mind on this lol. or i can just save the scope money to get the bolt nickle boron coated and the larger tac knob put on it.

i would rock a forward scope, as cooper intended, if it had a fixed mag and i needed to keep the action clear for reloading. but with the box mags, no need for it. im loving the XS rail, shot it today with it on and absolutely zero issues with ejecting brass. not in the way at all. i thought it might deflect of it once or twice while ejecting, but nope, nothing touched it. very pleased with the XS rail and im sure i will be ordering one for my marlin 30-30 very soon.

and yes, loving finally having a lefty bolt gun. so much nicer than shooting a righty one as a lefty.

Small Update i guess lol. got the XS rail, love it! fit right on with zero issues! i was expecting to have to twerk the rail a hair to get it to line up, but all the screws dropped in perfectly! picked up one of the blackhawk bipods from walmart on clearance for 35 bucks! seems to work fine so far. keeping the 3-9 that i have on it for now, saving for a nice leupold 1-4 for next years season though. vx-patrol firedot is catching my eye.. hopefully, if i can manage it, im going to bring my bolt up to the guys at FT Daniels tommorrow to get a new knob put on. and my new paracord sling should be here soon from Jclem02, gray/black to match :)

once i get the knob done im gonna take it down to Charlie Elliot (hopefully next week) to get a good zero and see how she really shoots. update this again to see what kind of groupings i can manage.

Pics suck bad lol, ill try and get better ones once i get the knob put on. ill try to be fancy with em then lol!

well i just finally pulled the trigger on a Leupold VX-Hog 1-4. got it through opticsplanet for 206.99. i was wanting a bit more power scope, but to keep it in the lightweight catagory for hunting the more powerful scopes were just to pricey lol. and honestly, i think a 1-4 is all you need for GA woods. (btw, the bipod will be in the bag, not on the rifle lol. in case i get a good spot where its usable, the bipod is range only). i may have to get some lower rings with the hog scope though, wait and see. i want it as low as possable to get a good cheek weld.

i also picked up the 5rd poly mag for it from midway. man, that thing fits great! alot better fit that the metal mag that came with it. i just did the 5rd to keep weight down, and thats all you need for deer (of course i have more rounds in the pack though :) ). they also make a 3rd flush fit poly mag, and a 10rd poly mag. thinking of ordering a 10rd to replace the metal one. the poly ones seem to feed better also.

im still wanting to do the bolt knob, but that may wait till after christmas though lol. and depending on if i can do lower rings and get a good weld, i may also be putting on a kydex adjustable cheek rest as well.

i did go shoot the other week at 100yds, but winds were high and i managed to get a great kill shot grp set at 100yds with the expensive deer ammo im using lol. Barnes Voretex 168gr is what i chose. didnt get any pics, but next time i go to sight in the hog i will for sure.

picked up a set of weaver low rings up at grand slam guns in athens, fit perfect! with this setup, i dont need a kydex rest it gets a good cheekweld for my likings lol. loving the eye relief the vx hog has. cant wait to go put a zero on it, hopefully sneak out this week to do it lol!
