My wife picked out this 38 Special -hope she can handle it ok

I got a good deal on a g42 I wanted to try out as an EDC, wife was with me and before we even got home she wanted it to be “hers” and after shooting it she was even more determined to have it so we know how that turned out…that was years ago and she still likes it so lm good with that! Then I had a good excuse to go get me something different, by myself lol. Speaking of shooting practice it’s a good day to spread some lead in the back yard!

There is a reason the 38, 357 and 9mm are called the widow maker

Not sure about 9mm, that's a perfectly good round these days if you use good SD ammo.

And 357? That is a proven 'man stopper' even in old-school loads. Biggest problem with it is that it's almost impossible to use well in a snubbie.

I do like the cartridges. But I've seen first hand where they failed to do the job very well

Yea, don't fight it when they're that enthusiastic about somethin like that

I thought Glocks were designed for women and dainty European "men".

A polymer .357, and a Taurus no less?

I had one for a while. Don’t run .357 thru them if you want them to last. The grip frame broke. Took forever for Taurus to warranty it, but they finally did. Now it only runs .38’s. But the option is there. I just don’t shoot .357 for practice. The poly can’t stand up to the beating.

Here’s an idea to help women get over recoil. Have her stand at the shooting position, no gun in hand. Get her to grip a length of flat rubber tubing between her teeth, while you stretch it out as far as the elasticity will allow. Then SNAP! Let it go.!

After doing this about 6 times she won’t think noth’n of a little recoil in her hand.

🤣

I didn't know Taurus made a polymer-frame revolvers, but they do soak up recoil better than a steel gun of the same size.

My LCR is the only 357 I can shoot as much as I like without being crippled the next day. The flex in the frame and that Hogue grip with the gel pad over the backstrap really make a difference.

On the flip side 38 isn't my favorite cartridge for self defense. I remember a few years ago a woman put five rounds into an attackers face, and he just yelled 'stop shooting me lady' and ran out of the house. He did eventually die a mile or two down the road, but hardly a quick stop and he could have just as easily died stabbing her to death.

That's just one story, but there's lots of others where 38 just didn't do the job. Just read some of Jim Cirillo's stuff for some scary/funny incidents he had with 38 police loads.

Still, with good quality SD ammo and good shot placement it shouldn't be an issue.
I think alot of that is ammo selection particularly with snubs and hollow points not having the right velocity, for 38 I recommend wad cutters to people Ga arms makes a carry load out of wad cutters as a matter of fact. Above all that though the face isn’t a “lethal” zone the truth is with handguns short of an artery or physically disabling an attacker with a shot to the pelvic region, your options are about an 8” region in the upper chest or the “5 circle for the CNS

I handled a Taurus "Poly Protector" that was a .357 magnum and only cost $279 at Academy Sports. They wouldn't let me take the trigger lock off to try the DA pull, but some internet research told me it was horrible and heavy.
Not a good choice for an inexperienced shooter, a female, or senior citizen.
