Former New York City mayor—and professional busybody and opponent of civil liberties—had some choice words for black kids during a question-and-answer session at the Aspen Institute last week. He accused young African Americans of violent nihilism and said that it was necessary to take away their right to have guns.
And then there’s this: his statement is pretty racist. You can look at what he said and think that he’s calling to disarm all young minority men. Lucky for him he’s a lefty darling or someone might make a stink over his assertion that young people of color shouldn’t be allowed to own guns.
I don’t think we should get too excited that Bloomberg has awoken to the fact that criminals commit crime. It’s probably more like that thing where you give a thousand monkeys a thousand typewriters and eventually they will write Shakespeare. If you give a billionaire a billion chances to talk about gun control, eventually he will say something that isn’t entirely idiotic. It’s a fluke of random chance, not a shift in his core desire to ban private gun ownership.
