I have a bergara b14 stoke (223) I want to rebarrel ( shouldered barrel) for a faster twist and to 223AI... it shoots good up to 73gr, but not the heavier bullets I want to use.

Can anyone recommend a good smith that doesn't have a many month backlog? I don't mind driving an hour or so it drop off and pick up, but I'd rather not ship.

I am about 2 hours north of Atlanta on 575/515.

Thanks for the info, but VA is certainly out of driving distance. American Precision website says they are not taking on any new smith work.

I’m aware of how far VA is. I offered it in case you changed your mind, since you stated that you’d “rather not ship”, and didn’t state “ain’t no way in hell I’m gonna ship”. Makes it sound like a possibility.

Jeff Walker has set records with the rifles he has built, he is priced reasonable, and his turnaround tends to be quick.

You put caveats and addendums on your request, and it’s going to limit your options for quality work.

Good luck.

You may also consider selling the Bergara and buying an action that takes readily available shoulder prefits if you plan on consuming barrels.

You specifically mention shouldered prefits but ReMage barrel nut prefits are what I do with older actions that do not take shouldered prefits.

cmshoot.... thank you, you are correct that i am limiting myself a bit by not wanting to ship. I do appreciate the
advice you offered. No disrespectful intent on my part. Hope you were not offended, I know that its easy
to accidentally do so over the web.

As for selling the bergara and buying an action that takes prefits.... good advice in general, and i have a rifle like this, but this rifle is not going to be a trainer, so it's unlikely to have the barrel shot out any time soon. Use will be coyotes, crows and the grandkids first deer( I hope ) I already own the action and if the barrel was 8tw or 7tw, I wouldn't change anything at all.

I can go the barrel nut route and I may still do that. I have all the tools, but to be honest I personally don't like the look of a barrel nut. I no longer longer own anything with a barrel nut..... I know I should just get over it... lol

Thanks for all the advise thus far.
