I was recently given a S&W .38 special revolver. I can’t find a model number on this gun. The numbers 71614 are located when you open the cylinder. Anyone know what I have and what it’s worth? Thanks

5 screw M&P. It is a pre model 10.

Front sight is not original/standard. To date it, remove the grips, the serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame.

When you look up the date, it is a "K" frame. Looks to be made before 1957, but later than WWII. Those are mid 70s or later vintage grips

Do you have box, docs, tools, and original grips?
No, just the gun. The gun was my friend’s dad’s gun. Think he was a police officer since he gave me a duty belt with holster, handcuffs, and speed strip mag holders
