Need Opinion - Optic(s) on AR

Sounds like a Low Powered Variable Optic is what you want. A 1-4x, 1-6x, or 1-8x. It will do everything you want in a single optic.

What is your budget? There are a lot of good LPVO’s out there nowadays, and some good suggestions made above already.

The ACOG is one of the finest combat optics out there, but folks tend to love ‘em or hate ‘em. Personally I’m not a fan, but only because I find the fixed power in the 3x - 4x range to be limiting for me; nothing wrong with the reliability or quality of the optic. If you think you might go that way, find someone that has one and spend some time behind it before purchasing.
Yeah and if you go ACOG for whatever reason, go TA33. It has the most forgiving eyebox. Most of the others are annoying.

I would mount the Aimpoint on it and spend my money on training. I humbly suggest going to an Appleseed training event to improve your marksmanship potential: www.appleseedinfo/schedulemap.org

I've shot IDPA sized silhouettes out to 500 yards with a 16" barrel AR-15 and an Aimpoint M2, with a sling for support - no bipod or rest. You can reach pretty far with just the red dot, if you know what you're about.

Great advice everyone, thank you very much!

LPVO is a great way to go, though a longer path. I dont have a budget, per se, but would like to spend a reasonable amount for the payoff...and sometimes I go for a few bells and whistles.

The ACOG route...its ~1200 for the optic, plus mount, plus RMR (a have-to-have with a fixed power), plus mount for that, and i'm looking at ~2k when all is said and done. Thats a bit much for this tool.
If I were to sell the PRO (~$400?) and the Romeo 5 XDR ($150, $200 maybe?) that would help but still $1500 is more than I would like to spend. Also this path would delay completion for a while while I get sales and other finances together.
Perhaps I should spend some more time behind one, as suggested.

the PX4i looks interesting. I will definitely do some reading on this one.
Vudu 1-6 SR1 or SR3 look appealing also. a bit more expensive, but those extra 2x may be worth it. Will also read on this.
Accupower is also a good one that I have seen quite a bit. Good choice...though I would want the 1-8, and thats back in the $1k+ range.

Heres where you need to be honest with yourself. Its not a precision rifle and how often are you going to shoot 400+ yards? Living in GA prob not as often as you are envisioning.
Great point! the 400+ will not be often. One of those 'if I'm setting up for 0-200, lets push it a bit further' deals. I always say if its worth engineering, it's worth over-engineering. So no...that is not a must-have by any means.

I guess I have some reading and considering to do!

Thanks again, everyone, and I welcome more input if others have any advice, opinions, or experiences to share!

VERY fair point also. In other circles I refer to this as the 'driver mod'. Will definitely take this into consideration, thank you.

I like good scopes. The fact I own over half a dozen Nightforces is testament to that. I say this so you will take me seriously when I say this.

The $200 Weaver KASPA 1.5 - 6 Tactical Scope is an outstanding LPVO. Combine it with 45 degree off set mounted BUIS and you are good for practically any situation.

These things are very sturdy. I have 4 of them and have never had a problem with any of them. Clear and the IRB-x reticle has pretty accurate come ups for the 55 or 62 grain ammo. Scope adjustments are accurate and repeatable. You might get more out of a much more expensive optic, but I'm not sure what it would be.

Everyplace I look on the web they have the reticle wrong in the description. They don;t come with a Ballistic- X reticle. They come with the IRB-X.

Vortex has a Strike Eagle 1-8x scope made for AR platforms. Compact, 8x is decent out to the ranges you are talking, but dial it back to 1x and it can work close up with both eyes open almost like a red dot.

Seems like a good compromise?

Very good optic for the money.

Agree. You can always add the magnifier later.

MBUS would be fine, either co-witness or lower third. I always tell people if iron sights are going to be your primary sights, get the Magpul PRO. If not your primary sight, ie you are using a scope, save the money and get the polymer ones.
