I have a Winchester model 70 Heavy Varmint in 22-250. It has a 26”-28” barrel and 1:14” twist barrel so I have to shoot the lighter bullets, it shoots 52gr SMK lights out. However the throat is gone. According to browning records the rifle was custom ordered in 2000 as an hybrid stealth model with an Heavy Varmint barrel sent to a gun shop in Colorado. I picked it up sometime around 2007. I got the rifle used with unknown round count and I have shot the absolute **** out of this rifle over the years. It’s the cartridge I learned to reload on, so it will remain 22-250.
From what I was told Wilson made the barreled for this rifle and Winchester said they cannot re-barrel it since they have no relations with Wilson anymore but agreed to let me send them the rifle and they would replace with a newer version with a 10% off coupon, that’s a **** deal in my opinion.
Should I do a complete re-barrel or can I find someone to chop a 1/2” off the chamber end of the barrel and have it re-chambered.
What would you do and who would you use to do it?
