I have a Winchester model 70 Heavy Varmint in 22-250. It has a 26”-28” barrel and 1:14” twist barrel so I have to shoot the lighter bullets, it shoots 52gr SMK lights out. However the throat is gone. According to browning records the rifle was custom ordered in 2000 as an hybrid stealth model with an Heavy Varmint barrel sent to a gun shop in Colorado. I picked it up sometime around 2007. I got the rifle used with unknown round count and I have shot the absolute **** out of this rifle over the years. It’s the cartridge I learned to reload on, so it will remain 22-250.

From what I was told Wilson made the barreled for this rifle and Winchester said they cannot re-barrel it since they have no relations with Wilson anymore but agreed to let me send them the rifle and they would replace with a newer version with a 10% off coupon, that’s a **** deal in my opinion.

Should I do a complete re-barrel or can I find someone to chop a 1/2” off the chamber end of the barrel and have it re-chambered.

What would you do and who would you use to do it?

If the rest of barrel is good I’d have it cut and retreaded and chambered. If not replace barrel. Check with grizzly guns in Jefferson, they should be able to fix you up either way.

I wouldn’t waste the money on getting it cut back because you’re going to spend the same amount of money if not more doing that, minus a new barrel cost

There are shops that sell Wilson Barrels.

They sell blanks and prefits.

A twist rate of 1:14 will stabilize heavier bullets in a high velocity cartridge (22-250). If you are a reloader, you might try loading the bullet out longer to compensate for the throat wear, and try a few heavier bullets-up to 77 grain.

I would definitely install a new barrel before trying to restore the old worn out original.

Gunsmiths are easy to find, good gunsmiths are not so easy to find.
