I have a 2006 Jetta TDI that is stalling. Car ran fine and never any hint of trouble till it stalled. bought car with 82k miles now has 95k miles. Fuel filter and timing belt replaces at 77k.

Was told by dealership that it needed an alternator and battery. After the $1,260 quote I towed it home and pulled the alternator and had it checked by a reputable shop that builds these and starters. Shop said it was working like it should. Replaced battery and at idle car is 14.2 volts. Take car for a drive and it stalls after 1.5 miles.

It's done this three times in a row. Get car back to house once I get it cranked and put gauges on it and at idle it's 13.8 volts. New serpentine belt, all fuses under hood and dash check good. Anybody with VW experience have a clue?

I'm thinking of checking the relay fuses

What about error codes? Check those. Another option is good old Scotty Kilmer in Austin (?) Texas (47+ year Auto Mechanic--he's on YouTube a lot)--shoot him an email/look for him on Google+ and see what he suggests.

Another option is an independent garage. I don't know where you live but I take my cars to Patrick's Auto Repair here in town [2029 Manchester St NE
Atlanta, GA 30324]
--he's not inexpensive but he doesn't f u around & he gets the sh_t done QUICK..

Good luck with it.

Most likely has lost communication codes thus dealer saying needs alternator

Question when it stalls does it fire up or needs a jump??

Or does it stall into limp mode
when it stalls the engine will turn over and after several attempts it cranks. I have to keep the rpm a minimum of 1k or it dies again

67eight 907-422one around griffin somewhere

Both of these guys are aircraft mechanics who work on V W Tdi in their off days

You changed the fuel filter ?
And checked the snow screen at the end of the air intake in front of the left front wheel under the bumper ?

Fuel filter replaced 15k ago, but could be dirty with bad fuel. Air intake clean. Extensive search on Internet showed several people has the same issue and it was the relay fuse under the dash. Towed it to german specialist for diagnostic.
