My son will graduate high school next year. I have always thought I would give him a nice engraved weapon on that day. I have an idea on what I will have engraved but 17 years later I still have not decided which weapon. My son grew up hunting with me and of course he already has the basics. .22 rifle. Shotgun. Deer Rifle. He is not a beginner and is familiar with all platforms and calibers.
My dilemma is this.. I want the gun to be nice enough for a safe queen but also useful enough to be taken out almost like your "go to weapon." I want it to have some historical relevance. Nice enough to be a prized weapon but not a safe queen. This is the reason I have fought over the decision for so long. I don't know if anything perfectly fits the bill.
My thoughts and I know you guys wont all agree which is why I'm asking for your opinions.
From a timelessness standpoint the 1911. I'm a big fan but I see them as safe queens. So historically significant that they should be protected by other weapons
I have thought about a nice compact which could become his CC later in life.
AR's. Love to take them out for some target practice fun. Love the versatility to create them anyway you want which really makes them a fun weapon to own and customize to your specs. This platform is still protecting our freedoms today which makes them hugely significant. But it isn't my go to weapon for any particular situation and I feel like he won't be getting her out much.
Double action wheel guns. We got lots of history here. These are great protection for all your woods and water adventures. Given enough barrel length they make a good choice for small game and give enough caliber size even big game. This one could most closely fit the need.
Lever action rifles. Plenty of history. Something that could be prized for a long time. My concerns here are that again.. it may not see the light of day much.
Semi auto pistols such as the Ruger Mark III or Browning Buckmark. If the SHTF and I had to run with 1 weapon. This might be my choice.
The #1 thing to keep in mind for my final choice is RELIABILITY.
This is where I hand it off.. Please share your thoughts and advice.
Thanks!
