From what I've heard from friends up there he used a hunting rifle to kill a Mountie, then used the cops guns for the rest of the attack.

Uber-Lib Trudeau ran for reelection on a full gun ban, and it almost cost him. He didn't end up with a majority, but he still ended up as PM, and while he needs other parties to pass legislation, the Greens and the Socialists will join him on this.

Sadly, he didn't even need that. There's a mechanism called an Order In Council, like a executive order in the States, but without the limitations.

This will probably get reversed next election though, hence the 2 year waiting period. When he ran on banning them last year people started figuring out what it would cost to pay owners, and the whole thing got shelved. I think he's hoping that by some miracle the Libs will still be in power 2 years from now, and pay pennies on the dollar.

We got hassled back in 1972 for crossing into Ontario, Canada from Niagara Falls, NY for having a .270 scoped hunting rifle in our camping trailer.
Gun was confiscated and returned to us by US Customs upon our return stateside.
We had honestly forgot about it... had been hunting months earlier in the Adirondacks
