Never thought I would ask a 22LR ammo question like this

My father in law keeps his 10/22 next to the sofa where he sits. He has extreme arthritis and a laundry list of health problems that make every day an experiment in how much pain he can tolerate. It's the only caliber he can handle and I made sure he had a mag full of CCI stingers in it.

I would find the ammo and mag combination that proves 100% reliable in your rifle rather than just trust others votes. Every 10/22 can be finicky. I’ve had several 10/22’s and CCI’s have never let me down. Some Remington Golden and Federals have given some of mine issues but not others. The only issues I’ve had with magazines has been one particular butler creek and one particular factory 10 rounder. I’ve never had an issue with a BX25, but I’ve heard others who have.

Quiets and Subs have always given me fits in every semi auto regardless of mags...so the poster above who uses them in a Derringer wouldn’t experience those issues like you will in a semiautomatic.

My preference in 10/22 would be CCI stingers or minimags...the 36grn and 40grn are always reliable for me.

Let's say someone is using a Ruger 10/22 for home protection and was also going to use the exact same ammo for plinking what would your choice be?
Who cares. Use whatever is cheapest. You'll probably be dead anyway.

I’ve had several 10/22’s over the years and the Stingers didn’t give me consistent groups. They were nice and hot but all over the target beyond 50 yards.

Now the 40 grain Federal Gold Medal works great in all of them. Slayed many many squirrels and a hog on a WMA squirrel hunt a few years back.
