New GA deer hunter...steps after kill?

My processor has NEVER looked at my harvest record and he's no fly by night (year round processor of cattle/hogs as his main livliehood).
To answer the OP, call the processor and see if he takes them on the hoof (ungutted). Then shoot, fill out tag, make your decision to gut (or not), process (get some jerky) and enjoy.
Filing out the tag allows the 1:10,000 chance you happen upon a WRD agent en route, to make sure you are legal (either sex days, etc...)

You bring up a question I never thought about though. Does a landowner need to take the hunter safety course if hunting their own land (since they don't need a license). Hmmm... interesting. I guess not, but now I have to find out.

No hunter safety course is required if you are hunting your own property. However, I didn't realize folks who are hunting their own property don't need a license. That's interesting.

Yep. But you DO need the (free) harvest record.

§ 27-2-1. Hunting, trapping, or fishing without license or permit generally; nonresidents

(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to hunt, fish, trap, or possess any wildlife or feral hog without first procuring all of the licenses, stamps, or permits required or authorized under this title.

Apparently that is not correct.

§ 27-2-5. Required hunter education courses

(a) It shall be unlawful for any person born on or after January 1, 1961, to procure a hunting license or to hunt by means of weapons in this state unless that person has been issued a certificate or other evidence the department deems acceptable which indicates satisfactory completion of a hunter education course as prescribed by the board. Persons ages 16 through 25 shall provide such certificate or other evidence to the issuing agent at the time of purchase of a hunting license. All persons required by this subsection to complete a hunter education course, by signing such license, by receiving a temporary license identification number, or by receiving a license from a telephone license agent, Internet license agent, or other vendor, shall certify their compliance with this subsection.

(b) It shall be unlawful for any person authorized to issue hunting licenses in this state to issue a hunting license to any person age 16 through 25 unless that license agent shall have been provided with a certificate showing the license applicant has satisfactorily completed a hunter education course as prescribed by the board, or to any other person born on or after January 1, 1961, unless such person provides such other evidence of completion of a hunter education course as the department deems acceptable. Internet and telephone license agents may accept a valid hunter education certificate number as fulfillment of this requirement.

(c) It shall be unlawful for any person age 16 through 25 who is not required by law to obtain a hunting license to hunt in this state unless that person carries on his or her person while hunting a certificate attesting to that person's satisfactory completion of a hunter education course as prescribed by the board. Such person shall present his or her certificate to a conservation ranger or deputy conservation ranger for inspection upon demand.

The 2014-2015 published regulations seem to contradict the regulations/law you cited. Please take a look at them and let me know what you think. I think that's where I'm confused but its probably a good idea for the youngsters to take the course anyway.

PLEASE REMEMBER (everyone) the "users guide" that DNR publishes is not, repeat is NOT the law. They do their best to put into layman's English but it is simply a 'guide'. The law is the code (generally titlle 27) and it's not the worst idea for hunters to read it.

I see what you are referncing. This has happened before. Let me see if I can get clarification from someone I know there.

I hunt my own land, and you do not have to get a license, but you do have to take the safety course.

And for the record, I still buy a license because I have permission to hunt a couple of my neighbor's properties which I rarely do, but if I ever have to retrieve a dead deer that made it to their property, I would prefer to have the license as a just in case.

Yep. That's very good advice.

Now I'm really confused.

"Hunter education is not required to purchase an Apprentice Hunting License, GORP Plus, or a Three-day Hunting & Fishing license. Hunter education is not required to hunt on one’s own land or land of a parent or guardian (blood or dependent relationship residing in the same household, or to hunt pen raised game birds on licensed shooting preserves that provide specified hunter education instruction)."

So you are saying this is not actually true? Laws should be clear and not confusing; there should be a definitive source for these types of regulations. Also, do I still need some hunter orange while hunting my own property?

Thanks for the help guys.
