New GA deer hunter...steps after kill?

PLEASE REMEMBER (everyone) the "users guide" that DNR publishes is not, repeat is NOT the law. They do their best to put into layman's English but it is simply a 'guide'. The law is the code (generally titlle 27) and it's not the worst idea for hunters to read it.

I see what you are referncing. This has happened before. Let me see if I can get clarification from someone I know there.

Title 27-2-5 does say an education course is required, but was law in 2010. Have the regs changed?

Now I'm really confused.

"Hunter education is not required to purchase an Apprentice Hunting License, GORP Plus, or a Three-day Hunting & Fishing license. Hunter education is not required to hunt on one’s own land or land of a parent or guardian (blood or dependent relationship residing in the same household, or to hunt pen raised game birds on licensed shooting preserves that provide specified hunter education instruction)."

So you are saying this is not actually true? Laws should be clear and not confusing; there should be a definitive source for these types of regulations. Also, do I still need some hunter orange while hunting my own property?

Thanks for the help guys.

I have read those regs you posted before, but I have always advised people based on the code Geaux posted earlier. Contradictory information does not surprise me though, and I believe Geaux mentioned above he was checking with someone he knew.

Not sure if you read my post above, but I hunt my own land about 95% of the time. I get a license just in the unlikely event I have to track a deer off my property (with permission of course) just so there are never any issues. But I also have a smaller tract of land.

You don't have to have the hunters ed class for the apprentice 3-day my fiancé has used it before hunting with me, As for the land I know of people who don't have licenses to hunt their OWN property, they do carry harvest records but they clean and process the deer at their house.

IMO- take the test just so you have it so that if a buddy ever offers you a trip to his land or camp, get a 3 day if your worried, but you're just fine as long as its your land or blood relation land.

I was told by a local processor that they are required to peek at your hunting license.
The harvest record is attached to that.

I think I mentioned earlier they peek at your harvest record.......I should have just said license.....my bad..

Dang I never had them look at either one. I drop off at least 1 deer a year when time won't let me do it myself. This year a wedding forced me to drop them off. I prefer to do everything from on their feet to on my fork myself.

Well I played email tag with my friend in WRD who would most assuredly know the real answer, and then voicemail.
Hopefully we'll connect tomorrow.
In either case, they are clearly contradictory. Not the first time, won't be the last, but putting it in BOLD in the popular guide certainly takes it up a notch.

Well thanks for trying to find a solid answer, it's appreciated. I don't need a license for landowner private land, but whether a hunter education course is required or not seems to still be up in the air. Would hate to miss opening day because of that.

Well I just heard back. Further down in secion (h) it reads....

(h) The requirements of subsections (c) and (d) of this Code section shall not apply to any person hunting on his or her own land or that of his or her parents or legal guardian or to persons permitting a child or ward aged 12 through 15 years to hunt on the parent's or guardian's own land.

There you go. Note to self... read the ENTIRE chapter. Textual chronology is NOT the strenght of our code. :)

Thanks Geaux, that's what I had determined earlier today while really trying to dig into the actual code. So easy enough, landowner hunt=no license, no course. I'll probably still get it just in case I get a chance to hunt someone else's property, but at least I won't miss opening day now. I appreciate the help!

You asked about wearing orange, OP...I would. It is difficult to know if someone strayed over the property lines - inadvertantly, of course - and that blaze could save your life. I don't know anything about where you hunt and if you can be 100% certain you are alone out there. I tend to err on the side of caution and while the deer may see a big blotch that is me, if you are still, it is not a liability...at least it hasn't been for me...ymmv
