New project - 1970 Ford

Have been wrenching on her pretty hard the past two days. Got the tank out, which I plan to empty. Started working on the floor pan rust areas. Opted for fiberglass, and a little bondo to fill in the bigger holes. Will top that with fiberglass, then eventually sand and paint later this weekend.

I’ve cleaned up the engine bay a tad, and have thrown some new goodies on there. T stat, water pump, fuel filter & lines, all rubber hoses, battery cables, etc. Even painted the pump and water neck! Think she’s looking good.

Lots of parts are on the way. Radiator, hoses, belts, clamps, etc. Suprisingly the parts store around me don’t seem to have many parts available… isn’t the 302 likeee Fords most popular engine ever..? Should have her running again by monday or tuesday.

Jump-pack, some gas down the carb, she runs! Was struggling at first, now idling off the tank. Diluted with fresh gas. Oil looked fine, didn’t even need to be topped off.

Temp looked OK. Radiator leaking slightly at the top. Oil pressure OK. Honestly don’t really know what I’m looking for as far as gauges, but nothing was extreme.

Would be driving her, if front tires weren’t shot. Looking to order those asap. Currently on 215s, may jump up to 225/235. Any good tire recs?
change the oil anyway. Condensation has built up that you can't see,

As for tires, like women every one has different tastes. but I've run Coopers for years on PUs, cars, everything.

Right now I'm running a set on my Honda Pilot that have a better warranty than Michelin at about 2/3ds the price. They were made in the USA haven't checked recently. Run Coopers on 4WD for decades.

And be sure to find some that has a higher zinc content to keep the cam in good condition. Newer car's don't need it due to the roller cam design but the older flat tappet style it helps keep it lubricated better.

Castrol GTX Classic or Valvoline VR1 Racing oil are both good options, Walmart has both at the same price online & some stores carry it inside.

Good idea to change out the brake fluid, it'll absorb moisture & is known to rust out brake lines if left to sit long term. The look/smell test doesn't work, only way to check is to buy test strips. But it's safe to say that almost no one will change out brake fluid in their years of owning it.

Rinsed her off, and tried something new to shine her up.

“Shine juice,” is what Vice Grips Garage on youtube calls it. 8 oz Linseed oil & to 4 oz mineral spirits. Makes more than enough, would probably cut amount in half next time. Wash her, apply with a rag, and boy does it make her shine. Curious as to how long it’ll last.

Changed the trans fluid, which was filthy. Will be changing oil & filter, oil pressure sending unit early this week. Then should be good to get on the road! Will need to address the exhaust system soon. Original muffler? Is partly rusted out and she’s loud. Looking for something that will sound good, duh, but won’t bother me in the cab. I’ve heard good things about Flowmaster. Any ideas on price to get new system installed?

Also, a new neighbor around the corner stopped by with his F350. She’s pretty. Apparently the 350 has a 302 as well? I figured it would have a big block. I love the green.

Thats the color my old 74 Ford truck waz .

That shine juice is the ticket ;)
I think Derek said in 6 months hit it again to freshen it up.

Never tried this, but, saw somewhere years ago that you can add a splash of kerosene to your wash water and wash and buff to a shine. Supposed to be how they keep fire engines shiney.

One other item to watch for is any rubber fuel lines you haven't changed yet.
Also the fuel pump may disintegrate with the ethanol laced gas.
Will gum up everything if there are old rubber still in the system
