No love for the .40

I don’t want to write a book but I know that I will just keep going.

Back when… Schools of thought:
a). big fat heavy bullets is the only way to go.
b). fast is everything.

The 45 people became jealous of those ‘little 9MMs’ that shot and shot and shot. It’s those jillion round magazines! Options, go to a skinny round (just become a 9MM), build longer mags (feeding problems), build new frames with fat mag wells (not a comfortable grip). No matter what is done, ‘it’ must equal the (perceived) power of the .45 ACP! The 10MM is born. Smaller diameter but pushes a little liter bullets fast enough to equate the (perceived) power of the .45. The world is great.

Out steps the ‘common’ shooter (run of the mill Cops). ‘There is too much recoil, it’s too loud, I want my 38 back.’ The powers in charge say, keep the 10MM but wimp it down. The 40cal is born. Make it a little shorter so the big bad 10MM won’t slip in. Oh, remember the design criteria of equal to the .45 in energy, well that’s gone.
Government spenders jump on the ‘new, sexy looking guns’.

I love my .45s and saw no reason for the 10MM. I had long ago dumped the ‘little’ bullet guns. But I accepted the arbitrary requirement of my employment. The real world is armed with autoloaders. I was issued a light barreled Model 10, 5 screw! I still smiled and fondled my .45.

Things happened as they always do. A change in administration, security moves to a higher level. We got some of the first government contract glocks, in 40cal. I was not overly please, I had recently moved up to a S&W Model 66, same 125gr 38 ammo. But, here comes the glocks. Everyone got glock training. In the first week, my first glock’s rails peeled off. My second glock just locked up, froze. Chambered round, wouldn’t fire, the slide wouldn’t budge, nothing. I don’t know how that one was sent back to glock.
As a direct results of my glock training, two things are set in my mind. My mind is made up, don’t try to confuse me with facts! First, I don’t have any use for glocks! Second, I like the 40 S&W round.

I have since retired and still carry my 1911A1s in .45ACP. But I have also bought a Springfield Arms XD40SubCompact. With the short mag, it slips into my back pocket very well and makes for an excellent carry weapon.

I read where the little 9s are so much cheaper to shoot. What? I role my own and don’t see the touted great difference. My .45 cost me the same as my .44 lead loads. My 40s use point 4 grains more powder than my 44s and 45s. Yes, my 40s do use 2 grains more powder than my brother’s 9MM loads. But come on. Where is the bank buster difference?
I love my 45s. I think my 44s, if not being in a revolver, would be an excellent self defense round and as for the 40s, well they are marginal to me, but in a handy package.

One last thought, for the ‘placement, placement, placement’ crowd, why aren’t you happy with just a 22RF?

Rants from an old fart.
Enjoy,

OSOK

Its NOT that bad!

A 300 grain bullet travelling at 2075 ft/s out of a handgun? Holy crap! That would roll your wrist up like a party favor!

HA! While looking for that I spotted this:

I really wish these idiots would stop giving high powered firearms to unsuspecting women as a joke. I don't find it funny and it is a good way to turn off people to shooting.

I started shooting with two .40s a glock 23&27, I loved them at first. Then I got a sig 9mm and shot much better with it, and with other calibers I tried (357sig, 380auto, 45acp, 50ae, 500s&w, 32 long colt, 38spl, etc.) and found that .40 was the just the wrong round for me. I still have the glocks, but with 357sig tubes now.

You are exactly right. It seems to be a tradition for some men to hand a woman a .44 mag. or a 12 ga., step back & tell his buddies,"Watch this..."
Not only does it turn women off from shooting in addition to creating a terrible flinch which is hard to correct but it is very dangerous as well.
I guess some men feel that it validates their "manhood" that an inexperienced female shooter can't "handle" the gun the way that he can.
When I used to encounter those sterotypes at public ranges when I was really getting engrossed in training & beginning to learn how to handle a gun from professionals I remember them professing that they "don't need no training" as they would sweep everyone at the range with the muzzle while having their finger on the trigger.
Their "fundamentals" reminded me of a newborn with their baby rattle.
