Do y'all think it is illegal for a gun owner to destroy or or permanently cover-up a gun's serial number IF the reason for doing so is to modify said gun into a more desirable configuration for use by said gun owner?

Examples:

Rifle's serial number is located exactly where you need to drill to mount a scope base.
So you drill through some of the digits of the S/N, and cover the remaining digits with the base itself.

Your shotgun's serial number is on the part of the receiver where you want to mount a side-saddle shell holder. Can you cover the S/N?

Your pistol has the serial number on the butt of the grip.
You want to put a stud for a lanyard there, to make the gun look like a Royal Constable's pistol from the early 1900's. You'll have to drill through 2 digits to do this.

If you were to cover/drill through the S/N, could you have the S/N engraved elsewhere on the firearm?
My thinking is how an SBR has to have the trust engraved on the lower receiver.

This might be a better question for big brother...

It's likely not legal to obliterate the serial number of a firearm, especially when done so knowingly and willfully. The idea of engraving a new serial number is a good idea, but in general, that's not something I would screw around with.
