ODT attorneys....Can your dust cover prove premeditated murder in a self defense scenario?

Serious legal question....I've never heard of this before.....my friend last night was talking about how you have to be careful what kind of engraved items you put on your gun in case you ever need it for self defense.....for example, he said that if you use your AR in a self defense situation and your dust cover has the words "You're ****ed" or "Smile, wait for the flash" ... something like that....a good prosecutor could use that to show intent and motive and charge you with murder. He said there was a case a while back where a police officer had to use his rifle to stop a threat and was charged with murder and convicted because the inscription on his rifle was successfully argued to show premeditated intent to kill. Any truth to this? It sounds absurd.

A "good prosecutor" could get a guilty verdict on an innocent man every time they try.

It depends on the totality of the circumstances. If you have been arrested or indicted, chances are there is much more evidence than any logo or saying on a dust cover. With that being said, in a justified shooting it will not make a bit of difference. I am not recommending you put any logos or quotes on your guns though.

I am not an attorney, but I am speaking on 16 years of being in law enforcement and working major felony cases.

The same argument can be made for SD ammunition.

"You had some super alloy deep penetrating 300% expansion with 110% weight retention supersonic +P+ loads because you wanted to kill this person, not just stop the threat."

Do what you will it as of 3/1/17, we are still a free country. As people have stated there are A LOT more factors to a shooting than what modifications someone had on their weapon. Politics, social pressures, personal vendetta's, etc. OJ killed folks and went free. That moron from "Making a Murderer", may have killed someone or not but that police force and DA were going to make sure he went to jail regardless. So either way, YORE skrewed.

In fact there was an officer who had your F***ed on the ejection port of his personal AR he used on the job. The defense attorney had a field day with that sh*t, all kinds of suppositions and innuendo.
Also it was not a department weapon. It was allowed by policy, but again suppositions and innuendo. The defense attorney attempted to persuade the jury that the presence of the engraving indicated a mindset....

Keep your carry pistol/rifle stock. Do not alter it to make it easier to shoot, keep the silly stuff for your range guns. In my experiences as a long time law enforcement officer, we were at best discouraged from altering our duty weapons, and prohibited from any alterations by SOP.
