Ok someone explain this to me

Why is it so important to have or keep the box the firearm came in? Never really could understand this. I purchase a firearm and plan to keep it for some time. I do not see the need to keep the box it came in.
 
That's your choice. Some folks like to have the original box. That's their choice. This is particularly true if the gun has any collectible traits such as classic S&W revolvers. The original box, the original grips, etc. all having numbers matching the serial number to the frame ads some value.
 
If you ever go to sell it, it is nice to have everything that came with it. Besides, it does have the serial number on it which could come in handy if the gun is lost or stolen.
