Old age whine and looking for help

The Smith M60 in .357/.38 is a great little gun in 3 inch barrel. It is a little heavy for pocket carry in SS. The M637 is a great choice in a light weight, exposed hammer, .38, and I believe less expensive than the M360. Given that you are limited to 5rnds, you might consider having both available. Maybe the M60 on the waist (I would prefer OWB, with a full cut shirt) with a 637 in a pocket or ankle holster. Can't have too many J-frames on you.

Oh yeah, in the interest of diversity, don't forget the Ruger LCR. Comes in .38+p and .357/.38. I prefer the .38 myself. Very light, handy, with a good trigger pull for a DAO. And plenty accurate in 2" for SD, as are the Smiths.

ill second that, I've got the lcr in 38 and love it. In the pocket or iwb no problem. Plenty accurate at the distances you will need. With the laser or without, hammer options as well with the lcrx but I went without so I can pocket it. Nice trigger pull.

The Byrd speaketh the truth...amazing triggers on the LCRs. Should be a little cheaper than a Smith, too.

Good luck in your search.

So, I was going to suggest the Smith Model 65-3 SS with a 3" barrel and it's a great carry but it can be a little heavy being a K frame. You can conceal carry it but it may show some printing. You'd probably do better with a Model 60 in the Smith as suggested. Or, You could try for a Ruger Security, Service or Speed six with the 2 3/4 barrel. That holds 6 and the barrel is almost 3" just shy by a 1/4". You can find those now around $300 blued and maybe $400 SS. I carry a Colt Cobra but it's just a 2" barrel but conceals well. Very accurate and weights very little even loaded with ammo. If you just have to have a 4" .38, you'd probably do better trying to find a smith Model 10 or 14. You know what you want and you know what you feel comfortable carrying so if you want 4", get it. All about your ability to feel comfortable and confident in what you're carrying. Why not get 1 of each that way you can have a pocket and IWB carry. I know, I know.....stop tempting you to spend all your money haha.

Just my $0.02

I've had the pleasure of working w/ several folks of your generation with similar circumstances.
Below are some of the options that some of our alumni have settled on.
I have most of the guns below which we loan out in classes & you would be welcome to test-fire them if you are in the area sometime.

A 3" model 60 S&W, 36, or similar J frame Smith should make some good options for you.

Others you might consider are the Colt Detective Special or Cobra along w/ the Ruger SP101 which might be a bit heavy at 27 oz. compared to around 25 oz. for the Colt.
The 3" J-Frames are pretty light at about 21 oz.

There are some really good defensive rounds out now in .38 +p such as the Speer Gold Dot 125 & 135 gr. & others like the DoubleTap or Underwood loads w/ quality bonded bullets.

Doing good, hope you are too. Just very busy. getting a lot more out of town folks coming out.

Thanks for the complement but we actually recommended some of the same platforms.

If I were to carry a revolver personally it would either be a Colt D.S. or a Cobra. Those guns shoot better than their barrel length would suggest. Maybe it is due to the nice triggers. The extra round while still being close to a j-frame in size means a lot to me also.
